The faith asked for is defined by four counterfeits before a single positive word, and every one of the four is a New Testament controversy. Not dead — James ii. 17 · not for a time — the believers of Luke viii. 13, who for a while believe · not hypocritical — the faith unfeigned of 1 Timothy i. 5 · not destroying the Law — Romans iii. 31, do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid. Only then the positive, and it is Galatians and James together: working by love, working together with works. A section that opened by confessing unbelief closes by ruling out the four ways of believing wrongly — and the Creed it has run three times is left standing on a faith that must be shown to be alive.

And three lines later the Latin must be refused. The Greek has the Father give the Son for a ransom ὑπ' ἐχθρῶν, at the hands of enemies; the Latin opposite reads pro hostibus, for enemies — the familiar theology of Romans v. 10. ὑπέρ does not elide to ὑπ', so the Greek cannot be read as the Latin reads it. The English follows the Greek and leaves the crux standing, immediately after the same column twice rescued it.

The plate cites Rom. v. 2, and the verse is Rom. v. 20. Superabundavit gratia is the Vulgate of Romans v. 20 word for word; v. 2 is access by faith into this grace, a different sentence. The same verb was already doing the work four leaves back at 375, where the grief lieth by me, qui mihi adjacet. Paul's word for the will that lies to hand seeds the whole movement, and the plate marks it in neither place.
