1THE EVENING SACRIFICE.

2Let me remember Thy Name in the night, and

3keep Thy law.[Ps. 119:55]i

4Let my evening prayer ascend unto Thee,

5and let Thy compassion descend upon us,

6Who givest songs in the night,[Job 35:10]ii

7Who makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to praise Thee,

9Who givest Thy beloved the sleep of health.[Ps. 127:3]iv

10THE HOURS.

11Who hast put the times and the moments in Thine own power,[Acts 1:7]v

12Grant that in fit and seasonable time we may pray unto Thee,[Mark 4:38]vi

13And save us.

14Who for us men, and for our salvation,

15wast born in the deep of night,[Luke 2:8]vii

16Grant us to be born again day by day by the renewing of the Holy Ghost,[Titus 3:5]viii

17until Christ be formed in us, unto a perfect man,[Gal. 4:19 / Eph. 4:13]ix

18And save us.

19Who in the early morning, the sun now risen,

20didst rise again from the dead,[Mark 16:2]x

21Raise us daily unto newness of life,[Rom. 6:4]xi

22Suggesting to us — Thou Thyself knowest them — the ways of repentance,

23And save us.

1Who at the third hour didst send down Thy Holy

2Spirit upon the Apostles,[Acts 2:15]i

3Take not the same Spirit from us,[Ps. 51:11]ii

4But daily renew Him within our inward parts,

5And save us.

6Who at the sixth hour, and on the sixth day, didst nail up with Thee on the crossiii

7the sins of the world,[Matt. 27:45]iv

8Blot out the handwriting that is against us,

9the handwriting of our sins, and, taking it out of the way,[Col. 2:14]v

10Save us.

11Who at the sixth hour a great sheet from heaven

12didst let down to earth, the emblem of Thy Church,[Acts 10:9,11]vi

13Receive us into it, sinners of the Gentiles,[Gal. 2:15]vii

14And with it receive us together into heaven,[Acts 10:16]viii

15And save us.

16Who at the seventh hour didst will the nobleman's son

17to be left of the fever,[John 4:52]ix

18If aught feverish cleave in our soul,

19or diseased, take it also from us,

20And save us.

21Who at the ninth hour, for us sinners and for our sins,

22didst taste death,[Mark 15:34 / Heb. 2:9]x

23Mortify in us our earthly members,[Col. 3:5]xi

24And whatsoever is contrary to Thy will,

25And save us.

26Who didst will the ninth hour to be the hour of prayer,[Acts 3:1]xii

27Hear us praying in the hour of prayer,

28And make us to obtain our prayer and our vow,

29And save us.

30Who at the tenth hour, by Thine Apostle, when he had found Thy Son,

1with exceeding joy,

2didst will it to be proclaimed, "We have found the Messias,"[John 1:41]i

3Make us likewise to find the same Messias,

4and likewise, having found Him, to rejoice,

5And save us.

6Who, though we stood idle all the day, didst yet vouchsafe,

7even at the eleventh hour of the day, the wage agreed,

8to send us into Thy vineyard,[Matt. 20:6]ii

9Do the same grace unto us,

10And, though late, as it were about the eleventh hour,[v. 9]

11returning to Thee, graciously receive us,

12And save us.

13Who at the hour of the Supper didst will to institute

14the holy mysteries of Thy Body and Blood,[John 13:2]iii

15Make us mindful and partakers of the same, never unto

16judgment, but unto remission of sin, and to obtain the bequestsiv

17of the New Testament,[1 Cor. 11:29]v

18And save us.

19Who in the evening didst will to be taken from the cross, and in the tomb

20to be buried,[Mark 15:42]vi

21Take from us, and bury in Thy sepulchre,

22our sins, covering with good works

23whatsoever we have done amiss,

24And save us.

25Who, far into the night, by Thy breathing didst confer upon Thy Apostles the power

26both of remitting sin and of retaining,[John 20:22,23]vii

27Make us partakers of that power,

28but as to remission, not unto retaining, O Lord,viii

29And save us.

1Who at midnight didst rouse David Thy Prophet,[Ps. 119:62]i

2and Paul Thine Apostle, to praise Thee,[Acts 16:25]ii

3Give us also songs in the night,[Job 35:10]iii

4And upon our bed to be mindful of Thee,[Ps. 63:6]iv

5And save us.

6Who at midnight, that the Bridegroom should come,

7hast affirmed with Thine own mouth,

8Grant that the cry may ever sound in our ears,

9The Bridegroom cometh,[Matt. 25:6]v

10That we may never be unprepared

11to meet Him,

12And save us.

13Who at cock-crow didst warn Thine Apostle,

14and madest him return unto repentance,[Matt. 26:74]vi

15Grant us also, at the same warning, to do the like,

16that is, to go out and weep bitterly,[v. 75]

17over those things wherein we have sinned against Thee,

18And save us.

19Who, in the day we look not for, and the hour we know not,

20hast foretold that Thou wilt come to judgment,[Matt. 24:50 / Luke 12:46]vii

21Make us on every day and at every hour to be ready, that we may

22wait for Thy coming,

23And save us.

24Who sendest forth light, createst the dawn,[Ps. 43:3; 74:16]viii

25makest the sun to rise on the good and the evil,[Matt. 5:45]ix

26Enlighten the blindness of our minds with the knowledge of the truth,[Eph. 4:18]x

27Lift up upon us the light of Thy countenance,[Ps. 4:6]xi

28That in Thy light we may see light,[Ps. 36:9]xii

1And at the last, in the light of grace, the light of glory.

2Who givest food to all flesh,[Ps. 136:25]i

3Who feedest the young ravens that cry unto Thee,[Ps. 147:9]

4And hast nourished us from our youth,[Ps. 71:5]ii

5Fill our hearts with food and gladness,[Acts 14:17]iii

6And stablish our heart with Thy grace.[Heb. 13:9]iv

7Who givest the evening for the day's end, that

8Thou mayest bring to our mind the evening of life,

9Grant us ever to consider that, as the day, so life

10flieth away.[Ps. 102:11]v

11Grant us ever to remember the day of darkness,

12for they are many,[Eccles. 11:8]vi

13that the night cometh,

14when no man can work,[John 9:4]vii

15By working, to forestall the darkness,

16lest we be cast into the outer darkness.[Matt. 25:30]viii

17Ever to cry unto Thee,

18Abide with us, O Lord,[Luke 24:29]ix

19for it is toward evening, and the day of our life

20is now far spent.
