The reference here is the 1853 editor's, in his brackets, and his contraction is ambiguous. He writes [*Ez.* ix. 6.], which in this volume could stand for either Ezekiel or Ezra — the two are elsewhere kept apart as *Ezech.* and *Ezr.* The verse is Ezra's: I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God, which is a countenance cast down and a confusion, exactly the posture and the affection the line names; Ezekiel ix. 6 is the order to slay at the sanctuary and has nothing to do with either. The volume settles it from inside itself — printed 171 prints the same verse in full as *Ezr.* ix. 6, 7, in the same penitential sense. Brightman reaches the same reading independently, tagging the sentence Of Ezra.
