Four of the six titles are the Vulgate's own word, lifted from the verse printed beside them. Tit. ii. 14 ut mundaret sibi populum gives mundator; Heb. ii. 15 ut liberaret eos gives liberator; Col. ii. 15 palam triumphans illos gives triumphator; Heb. vi. 20 ubi præcursor … introivit Iesus gives præcursor, the only place the word occurs in the New Testament. The catalogue is quarried, not composed. Exactly two depart, and both depart somewhere. Rom. viii. 34 says only interpellat pro nobis; Advocatus is at 1 John ii. 1. And Heb. xii. 2 reads auctorem fidei et consummatorem where the plate sets Instaurator — the verb of Eph. i. 10, instaurare omnia in Christo. At the second Advent the title is not the finisher of our faith but the restorer of all things; the English keeps "finisher" because the reference is to Hebrews and Part III renders it so.
