Variæ Lectiones et Addenda Quædam — raw transcript

This is a collation ledger, not primary text. It is transcribed verbatim and it is NOT translated: the entries are the 1853 editor's Latin notes about a manuscript, addressed to a reader who has the book open. Class-A readings are resolved against our own files in CLASS-A-ledger.md; nothing here is silently applied to any transcript.

Transcription discipline: verbatim incl. accentuation; Greek per the standing rule (vision only, [?] where unreadable, never inferred from context); Hebrew given as printed, right-to-left, with a confidence note wherever the 200-dpi image cannot separate look-alike sorts (ד/ר, ב/כ); the editor's own italics preserved; lin. / col. / sqq. / ult. / penult. left unexpanded.

⚠ THE DOT-MARKS. The apograph indexes certain prayers with marks made of dots — one dot, two dots, three (∴), four (⸬), and apparently more. Where the count is legible it is given as that many · inside braces, e.g. {···}. Where the arrangement cannot be resolved at 200 dpi it is given as {·?} and must not be guessed — these marks are the manuscript's own index to the prayers and an invented arrangement would corrupt it. Transcriber's notes

  1. Extent. Class A = apparatus [i]–vi (printed pp. 6–242). Class B = vii–ix (printed pp. 2–250). Class C = ix–x (printed pp. 4–246). The whole apparatus is PDF 482–493, twelve pages; notae-marginales-transcript.md carries [xi]–xii and the FINIS. ⚠ The brief mapped the Notæ as PDF 492–495; they end at 493. PDF 494 and 495 are blank (measured: 146 and 31 dark pixels), 496 is library end matter.

  2. ✅ RESOLVED 2026-08-10 — the dot-marks are read. They were transcribed {·?} because they could not be counted at 200 dpi. Re-read on the University of Toronto scan (leaf 0480, apparatus ii, native resolution; see SOURCE-IMAGES.md) they are unambiguous, and they are an ascending count: · Ἀλληλούϊα 1 · ·· μὴ διαφθείρῃς 2 · ∴ Ὡσαννὰ 3 · ⁘ Δειλινὴ 4 · ⁙ ἐπιλύχνιος 5. ⚠⚠ And the count does more than number — it PAIRS ACROSS THE TWO COLUMNS. The column-ii entries carry the marks of their column-i partners: ·· μετὰ has the 2 of μὴ διαφθείρῃς, and ∴ διὰ has the 3 of Ὡσαννὰ. So the marks are not a bare list-numbering; they are how the apograph tells the reader which column-ii item belongs to which column-i item — which is exactly what the surrounding rubric (col. ii. … legenda sunt, ad hunc modum) is instructing. The same system counts one-two-three-four at printed 76. 10–13. Off the pre-print list.

  3. ✅ Hebrew confidence — THE RE-READ IS DONE (2026-08-10), and every form is confirmed. Re-read on the Toronto scan (SOURCE-IMAGES.md): אדאג at 38. 3 (leaf 0480) — the form that was secure only on sense is now secure on the sorts too, and the ד is a dalet, not a resh, which the sense had required (אדאג, I am anxious, for μεριμνῶ); יצר טוב at 76. 4 and תהום · תוהו · בוהו at 92 (leaf 0481); the seven-word column at 96. 25 — יצר · שגגה · אשם · חטאה · פשע · עון · תועבה (leaf 0482), all seven letter for letter; and ואתה תעל משחת חיי at 152. 8 (leaf 0483). No transcription changed. The 200-dpi readings were all correct. ⚠ Not yet re-read, because none of it is set anywhere: the אל תשחית / הצילני / תעל משחת / חיי cluster at 198–202 and יראתי כסלתי at 212. 1.

  4. The 1853 discloses its own conjectures at printed 100. 10, 104. 6, 202 and 242. 6, and the manuscript overrules all of them. Recorded in CLASS-A-ledger.md §3, applied nowhere.

  5. Class A and class C collide at nine lines. Recorded and left unresolved in CLASS-A-ledger.md §4 — the direction of class C's ] cannot be settled from the printed apparatus alone.

  6. The Latin question has been tested and the result is in THE-LATIN-QUESTION.md. Two of ten test cases show the Latin supporting the apograph against the printed Greek; one of them (Figmenta for τὸ πλάσμα, printed 34/35) departs from the printed Greek and from the Vulgate and is very hard to explain any other way. Surfaced, not acted on.
