Notæ Marginales ex eodem MS. — raw transcript

Source: 1853 Parker ed., PDF 492–493 (apparatus pages [xi]–xii), images raw/end/p-NNN.jpg.

THE BRIEF'S PAGE MAP WAS TWO LEAVES LONG. It gave the Notæ Marginales as PDF 492–495. They are PDF 492–493 only: PDF 493 closes with FINIS. and the printer's imprint EXCUDEBAT R. CLAY, LOND., PDF 494 and 495 are blank (146 and 31 dark pixels respectively, measured), and PDF 496 is the library/Google end matter. The whole apparatus is twelve pages, PDF 482–493. Same class of error as the map's "~397" for Part II and "~430" for Part III — an estimated range that was never walked to its end. Corrected 2026-08-03.

⚠ WHAT THIS DOCUMENT IS, AND WHY IT MATTERS MORE THAN ITS LENGTH SUGGESTS. These are the manuscript's own marginal notes — Andrewes (or his copyist) recording, prayer by prayer, which ancient liturgy the prayer was taken from. It is the author's own source apparatus. It is the reason the Preces can be called a cento rather than a composition, and it is direct evidence for CONVENTIONS §6's account of what the book is.

⚠ THE BRACKET RULE, AND IT IS LOAD-BEARING. The head-note reads: Quæ nosmetipsi addidimus, uncinis sunt inclusa.what is in square brackets is the 1853 editor's, what is unbracketed is the MANUSCRIPT's. So S. Chrysost. Liturg. is Andrewes' note; [Goar, Rit. Græc. p. 74. Paris. 1647.] is the editor giving chapter and verse in Goar's Euchologion. Never merge the two. Any future presentation of these notes must keep the brackets or it will attribute a 1647 Paris edition to a man who died in 1626.

Transcription discipline as in variae-lectiones-transcript.md: verbatim, Greek by vision only, brackets exactly as printed.

Transcriber's notes

  1. Twenty-four notes in all, covering printed pp. 16–246 — i.e. entirely within Part I, and entirely within the usque ad pag. 250 range of the apograph. There is no source-note anywhere in Parts II or III, which is consistent with the apograph not extending there and is not evidence that those Parts are un-sourced.

  2. The liturgies named are three, and only three:

    • S. Chrysostom — pp. 16, 18, 32, 54, 56, 118, 122, 138 (×2), 140, 238, 240
    • S. James — pp. 66, 116, 118, 124, 126, 140, 162
    • S. Basil — pp. 118, 240, 242, 244 (×2), 246

The distribution is not random and should not be flattened into "the Eastern liturgies." Chrysostom carries the morning and intercessory matter; Basil is concentrated almost entirely in the eucharistic sequence at pp. 238–246 and appears nowhere before p. 118; James is spread thin across both. Three notes name two liturgies for one passage (pp. 118. 7; 140. 7; 240. 4) — Andrewes knew a phrase stood in more than one rite and said so.

  3. The gap from p. 140 to p. 162, and again from p. 162 to p. 238, is in the manuscript, not in our transcription. The two leaves are consecutive (PDF 492, 493) and nothing is missing between them. Do not read the gap as loss.

  4. p. 246. lin. 19. Ἥνωται carries the only note in which the editor supplies a Greek rubric rather than a page reference — [Εὐχὴ ἐν τῷ συστεῖλαι τὰ ἅγια.], "the prayer at the veiling of the holy things." Bracketed, therefore the editor's, therefore not evidence that Andrewes' MS named the rubric.

  5. Editions cited by the 1853 editor (all bracketed, all his): Goar, Euchologion sive Rituale Græcorum, Paris 1647; Auctarium Bibliothecæ Patrum, tom. ii, Paris 1624 (for St James). Both post-date Andrewes. A pre-print check should confirm the Goar page numbers, which are the only externally verifiable claims in this document — but that is a courtesy to the reader, not a correction to Andrewes.
